Interview with Romy J Sharf
(Alpha-5)
1. How are you doing today?
Today? Ok, I guess… Staying safe at home as much as possible. I can’t really complain because I have my family, my house, enough food and my dog. My dog is keeping me somewhat sane during all of this!
2. How did you get the role of Alpha 5 in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? Did you ever try auditioning for a role in the newer seasons of Power Rangers?
I got a mysterious phone call one day to come and audition for a new show. I honestly have no idea how they got my name or phone number because it wasn’t through an agent. I was supposed to work at my restaurant job that day, but I called to say I had an audition and I’d be late. They knew I was an actress and auditions were not to be missed. Thank goodness for an understanding boss! I met with the executive producer and he asked me to read some lines and do some robotic movements. I have a background in dance as well as theater, so I did a little lock and pop- lol! We spoke for a bit and got along quite well. He said he had a few other people to interview, but he really liked me for the part. I got a call the next day that it was mine and the rest is Morphin history! No, Ive never auditioned for any other seasons.
3. What is your favorite memory from filming the show?
The Alpha 5 Christmas special! We brought in several kids for the taping and they were all shocked to see me without my helmet on. They had no idea that one- Alpha was not an actual robot and two- Alpha is a girl?!? They were so cute and would ask before each take if they could flip the switch on my costume to turn on the lights. It was a really fun and special day in the command center :)
4. Describe your experience while filming on set?
Long days, lots of waiting around. Great cast and crew to work with though! Everyone was super nice to be around. The suit was horrible to wear though! Very heavy, hot and uncomfortable!!!
5. If you were asked to come back to play Alpha 5, would you return? (We would love to see this!)
Sure! Why not? I wonder if the suit still fits…. Hmmmm
6. Did you get to take anything back from the set?
HA! No, I wish!
7. What's the one thing about you that very few people know about you, and if they found out, might be surprised to know?
I’m really very tall! Haha… jk! Ummmmm……. I did years and years of improv comedy and was supposed to be in the Groundlings in L.A. but ended up moving to Orange County, CA which is kinda far to drive so I didn’t go. Also, I wrote sketch comedy and performed in a couple sketch troupes around L.A. I seriously miss doing that!
8. What are some of your hobbies?
I’m a total gym junkie! I really miss my workouts right now cause all the gyms are closed :( I’m working out with YouTube videos at home, but its not the same! I also love to cook, so I REALLY NEED TO WORKOUT!
9. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Oh geez… don’t quit Power Rangers cause there wasn’t anything else for me after that! I had an agent that promised me so much, but never delivered. My acting career pretty much ended. Also, I should have joined The Groundlings anyway and either not move to OC, or just dealt with the drive.
10. How did you prepare for the role?
I really didn’t do much I guess… it ain’t Shakespeare! Lol
11. What's your all time favorite food?
SUSHI!!!! yum yum yum
12. If the whole world was listening to you for a minute, what would you say?
Be nice to each other!!!! Kindness goes a long way! Listen, don’t judge and try and put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Everyone has a story to tell and life experiences that made them who they are. We’re all human and want the same things out of life- Love and happiness!
13. What was it like wearing the Alpha 5 suit?
MISERABLE!!! I ended up with back trouble and needed physical therapy for a while. I'm ok now, but geeeez, that thing was awful!
14. If you were cast as power ranger in an upcoming season, what color ranger would you want to be?
Purple- my favorite color :)
15. Who was your favorite actor/actress among the cast of MMPR and which of them was close to you?
Hmmm… everyone on the show was super cool! Just gonna leave it at that ;)
16. What advice do you have for new aspiring actors in the industry?
Keep pursuing your dream, but have a backup plan! Actually making a living in this industry is sadly unlikely. I don’t care how talented you are or how beautiful you are, it’s usually pure luck or who you know. I know so many incredibly talented people that have never been cast in anything! It just didn’t happen for them. Sorry to be a downer, but it’s better to be realistic and go into it knowing that it may not be meant to be. But do community theater if you can and keep practicing your craft! Just do it for the love of acting :)
17. What is your opinion on Alpha 5 from the 2017 movie?
Alpha looks like a drug addict! He’s not cute and lovable any more :(
18. Have you watched any Power Ranger seasons other than MMPR?
Nope
19. Who is your all time favorite Power Ranger character (from any season)?
Me! Lol... Ok, actually Rita Repulsa is pretty freaking bomb!
20. Have you ever tried Indian food, if yes, what and how was it?
Omg, YES! I love Indian food!!! Curry, Samosas, Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, Tandoori... The spicier the better!
21. Do you have any plans of visiting India in the future?
I only have plans to visit my backyard as of now… I’d love to visit india one day when the world returns to normal!
22. Do you have a message for your fans?
Thanks for all the love and support over the years! It’s amazing that all these kids who watched Rangers growing up are still such huge fans! I love meeting you all at the Comic Cons and hearing how you raced home from school every day to watch the show. Peace, Love and Power Rangers! Xoxoxo
